Community Discount Card Launch Aims to Boost Birmingham Businesses and Help Residents Save

BIRMINGHAM, UK — A Birmingham community organisation has unveiled a new discount card designed to help residents save money while strengthening local businesses across the West Midlands.

Desire Community Hub (DCH), based in Balsall Heath, has launched the Community Saver Card, which offers exclusive discounts and special offers from a wide network of participating local traders.

DCH has become a vital part of the local landscape since opening its doors more than three years ago. The hub provides free IT and English courses, sewing workshops, coaching sessions, and regular coffee mornings. Its wider mission focuses on youth engagement, knife crime prevention, and mental health support, in close partnership with Crimestoppers.

Cardholders will be able to claim savings across a diverse range of sectors, including:

  • Restaurants and cafés with offers on dining and takeaway
  • Hair and beauty salons providing reduced prices on treatments
  • Supermarkets and convenience stores with discounts on everyday goods
  • Travel agents and holiday services with special rates on trips and packages
  • Wedding and event services offering exclusive deals
  • Motoring services, including MOT, servicing, and car care
  • Leisure and lifestyle outlets offering everyday savings

The aim is to encourage people to spend locally, supporting small businesses while helping families stretch their budgets further.

“The idea is simple but powerful,” explained Sajad Khaliq, Founder of Desire Community Hub and CEO of Asian World and World Eye Media Groups. “By connecting businesses with the local community, we can help families save money and give local traders the loyal customer base they need to grow.”

Mr Khaliq has also expanded DCH’s reach, opening a new centre in Bordesley Green and confirming plans for another in Sandwell, enabling even more communities to benefit from the hub’s services.

The project is also driven by Hasina Sheikh, Director and Co-Founder of DCH. A well-respected figure in the local community, Ms Sheikh has been at the forefront of community work for over two decades. She leads a local women’s group, supports families facing hardship, and has played a pivotal role in uniting community members through education, social activities, and outreach programmes.

“This scheme can make a real difference,” said Hasina Sheikh. “People simply show their Community Saver Card at participating businesses to access discounts and offers. It’s a practical, no-fuss way to support local shops and services while helping families manage rising costs. I’ve worked in the community for over 20 years, and this is exactly the kind of initiative that can bring people together.”

DCH is the first organisation in the West Midlands to partner with the Community Saver platform and offer a white-labelled discount card. Businesses can join free of charge, receiving complimentary promotion and advertising through DCH’s network, while residents can save hundreds or even thousands of pounds annually.

The launch has already secured the backing of Crimestoppers and several local media partners, including Asian World Newspaper, Unity FM, and Community Observer News.
