Walsall residents have just one week left to share their views on how food waste should be collected from homes across the borough.
The consultation, which closes on Friday 7 November 2025, asks for feedback on two potential options for the delivery of a new weekly food waste collection service required under the Environment Act 2021.
While the council must introduce a food waste collection, using it will remain optional for residents.
The two options under consideration are:
Option 1 – separate weekly food waste collection + small electrical items
A separate weekly food waste collection, with households given a small kitchen caddy and a larger lockable kerbside caddy.
- Includes free doorstep collection of small electrical items.
- Adds approximately £1.7 million per year to the cost of waste services.
Option 2 – mixed food and garden waste collection
A weekly mixed food and garden waste collection, using the existing brown wheeled bin.
- Does not include doorstep collection of small electrical items.
- Adds approximately £2.6 million per year to the cost of waste services.
“ Food waste makes up a significant proportion of what we throw away, and how we manage it has a real impact on our environment and our communities.
“We want this new service to be effective and convenient for residents, so it’s vital we hear your views – your feedback will help shape how food waste is collected across Walsall for years to come. “
