Former Walsall Factory Site to be transformed into Town Centre Apartments

A derelict factory site in Walsall Town Centre is due to be transformed into apartments now that the developers have satisfied a number of pre-demolition conditions set by the Planning Authority in relation to construction management, hazardous materials, breeding birds and bats. A demolition notice has also been approved by Walsall Council’s Building Control service.

The site is known as Saddlers Quay and includes Greatrex House, William House and the former Argyle Works adjacent to the New Art Gallery and Canal Basin and has been an eyesore for a number of years. The plan is to build 222 one and two-bedroom apartments and create 90 parking spaces on the site.

The scheme supports the vision of the Walsall Town Centre Masterplan, working towards a more mixed use that combines retail with leisure and town-centre living.

Speaking about the development. Cllr Adrian Andrew, Deputy Leader of Walsall Council said:

“I’ve been working on this project for a number of years and it’s great to see some real concrete progress. This is another piece of the jigsaw of regenerating our borough and another positive example of putting derelict sites into use.”
